Steve McQueen’s Porsche 917K hero car from Le Mans, Chassis No. 917-022, is heading to auction this week in Kissimmee, Florida.
An auction sale estimate was not provided, however the Porsche 917K chassis 914-024 previously owned by Swiss racing driver, Jo Siffert, sold for a hammer price of $12.8 million, ($14.08 million with fees), which set a record for the most expensive Porsche sold ever at auction during the 2015 Pebble Beach event.
This car, chassis 022, last crossed the block at the RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction in 2000, selling for $1,320,000 including premium. Shortly after it ended up in comedian Jerry Seinfeld’s car collection where it has remained. This Porsche 917K LeMans movie star has also been owned by Steve McQueen/Solar Productions (1970-1971), Reinhold Joest (1971-1975), Brian Redman (1975-1977), Richard Attwood (1977-2000), and Frank Gallogly (2000-2001).
Not only was this Porsche 917K piloted by McQueen during race sequences in the 1971 LeMans movie, it also has quite the track record for success, including back-to-back victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970 and 1971. Most recently, it has appeared at prestigious events such as the Monterey Historic Automobile Races and the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance under passionate Porsche enthusiast Jerry Seinfeld’s ownership.
The Porsche 917K underwent a restoration by Cavaglieri Restorations of Van Nuys, California, which was completed in August 2024. The restoration included a brake and suspension overhaul along with a refresh of mechanical components. The entire car was repainted, and new graphics were installed during the restoration to correctly match the Blue and Orange Gulf Oil No. 20 livery seen in the movie “Le Mans”. It is powered by a 4.5-liter (4494cc) V12 engine developing 573 horsepower (427kW) and 366 pound-feet of torque (496Nm). Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission.
The Porsche 917K Chassis No. 917-022 is scheduled to cross the Mecum Auctions’ auction block on January 18th in Kissimmee, Florida.
