Nürburgring upgrades road surface and infrastructure for 2025 season
Winter construction has begun, with a $2.6 million investment fueling the track's many improvements
During the winter months at the Nürburgring, the vehicles roaring around (except for EVs), screeching their tires, and competing for the best lap times give way to the completely different sounds of construction machinery.
These extremely important maintenance activities take place on various sections of the famed track’s topography, helping it to handle the new season’s traffic once the weather warms up. A total of $2.6 million (€2.5 million) is being invested in the planned upgrades for the ‘Ring’s 2025 season.
The Nürburgring Nordschleife gets .8 miles (1.3 km) of new asphalt
This year’s asphalt work centers on the two different sections of the Green Hell. Most of the crews’ efforts will focus on the Pflanzgarten area, in which .7 miles (1.15 km) of the track will be upgraded at the “ice curve.” A smaller, but just as important piece of the work will take place in the Kesselchen area, where the right-hand curve ahead of the "Steilstrecke" section will receive 590 feet (180 m) of fresh asphalt. This involves a total rebuild of the road surface, keeping the performance character the same while enhancing driver safety.

The Grand Prix track, which hosts many races and other public events, along with the adjoining paddock area, will also receive significant attention. This will consist of the modernization of its drainage, hydrants, cabling, and other areas.
A new exit will be added for tourist drivers
A major part of the winter project is the construction of an extra exit located at the Döttinger Höhe on the Grand Prix circuit. This will reduce traffic congestion on the track when the very popular tourist rides are taking place by allowing vehicles to easily exit the track onto an adjacent road.

Tourist days are also known as public sessions, which let members of the public drive their own cars (or rent one) and experience the track for themselves. At these times, the track is considered to be a public road. Tourist days start on March 15, 2025, run through mid-November, and are generally held on weekdays from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM and on weekends from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM. A racing license is not required but a valid driving license is.
All the work should be completed by early March
So that the planned upcoming season can start on time, all of the construction work must be finished before the first major event takes place at the Nürburgring. This will be the first race of the ADAC Nürburgring endurance series, scheduled for March 22, 2025. Tourist drivers, who are permitted to drive the track before it opens, will also be reserving their times during March. This means that the track must have all projects done on time.
We don't envy the construction crew and wish them the best of luck in improving our driving experience on one of the world's most famed stretches of asphalt!
