Nissan might be gearing up for a new Xterra

Things seem to be looking up for Nissan lately, with the launch of a new Z, new Kicks and Murano models, a redesigned 2025 Armada, and a possible merger with fellow Japanese automaker Honda.

A new patent filed on December 23rd suggests that the brand might add one more SUV to its stable, this time with a familiar nameplate.

The Xterra has a long legacy

The Nissan Xterra is the other body-on-frame SUV with the off-road chops and verve to take on the Toyota 4Runner. It enjoyed a 16-year production run lasting until it left the U.S. market in 2015, spawning a cult following that has lasted ever since.

Owners love it for its raw simplicity and 4.0-liter V6 that comfortably took it off the beaten path. Even better, they’re cheap to buy today, unlike the Toyota 4Runner and FJ Cruiser, which hold their value like cement.

So, of course, the new patent has us very excited, refreshing speculation of a return for the Xterra. The trademark lists identification as “Motor vehicles, namely, automobiles, sport utility vehicles, and structural parts, therefore.”

Although dead in the U.S. market, the Nissan Xterra is still alive and kicking in the Middle East. Since 2021, it has been sold as an SUV based on the Nissan Terra, which itself is based on the Nissan Navara.

Having an already-existing Xterra variant in other countries could mean the U.S. will see its return sooner than later if the trademark request is a success.

Although speculation is high, the Xterra would fit right at home here in the U.S. The Toyota 4Runner was redesigned for 2025, while the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco are also available as contemporary rivals to Nissan.

It's also a toss-up regarding powertrains. Toyota is incorporating more hybrids into its SUV lineup, while Jeep offers an increasingly popular plug-in variant of the Wrangler.

The Ford Bronco, meanwhile, is delightfully old school, relying on retro looks and turbo power to boost its appeal. Nissan could go any which way with the Xterra if it comes to fruition.

Final thoughts

With the patent filed pretty recently, it's fair to speculate that development on the rebirth of the Nissan Xterra is still in the early stages. Its fate might also depend on how the talks with Honda turn out. We’ll keep an eye out for more information on the Xterra front.
