NASCAR Legend Richard Petty’s 1970 Plymouth Superbird Could Sell for $1,000,000

Richard Petty, the legendary seven-time NASCAR championship winner and seven-time Daytona 500 dominator, owned this 1970 Plymouth Superbird between 1982 and 2013. It reportedly was the only street-legal Superbird he ever had in his collection, and now, later this month, it is expected to sell for between $900,000 and $1,000,000 at auction.

Plymouth only ever built 1,935 Superbirds during the car’s single model year, and while this isn’t the lowest-mileage one in existence, it’s undoubtedly one of the most special, complete with Richard Petty’s signature on the trunk, sealed by clearcoat.

According to Classic.com, the average sale price of a Plymouth Superbird is around $278,444. In December 2024, an unrestored, undriveable 1970 Plymouth Superbird sold for $203,000. Back in July 2022, a one-of-135 Hemi V8-equipped 1970 Plymouth Superbird was sold for a record $1.65 million.

It’s not often that such an iconic muscle car with a history of motorsports celebrity ownership hits the public market. This Superbird, which Petty parted ways with in 2013, has just 28,394 original miles (45,695 km) on the odometer and is being offered with several letters and photos from the legend himself.

Before letting the muscle car go entirely, Petty’s Garage in North Carolina completed a $26,900 restoration in 2014 that included removing the engine and transmission and stripping the car down for a repaint. It was coated in the white finish you see in the photos. This was when Petty signed the trunk before the clear coat was applied. A new vinyl top was also added, and every chrome piece was polished.

The original 440 cubic-inch Super Commando V8 that was rated for 390 horsepower from the factory was reinstalled and mated to the A727 automatic transmission, which sends power through an 8.75-inch rear-end.

The interior is beautifully preserved and customized with black leather seats lined with white stitching. An image of Petty appears on the headrests. The dashboard also wears his signature with a personal message that reads, “take care of my car!”

This famous Superbird has starred in several TV shows, including MTV Cribs, Car Crazy, My Classic Car, Stacey David’s Gearz, and MotorWeek.

Considering that this Superbird was owned by one of the most iconic and successful American racing drivers ever, a hammer price of one-million-dollars might not be too far off.  We’ll find out when the muscle car rolls across the Mecum Auctions’ block on Saturday, January 18th at the Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, Florida.
