The Spirit of America is back in Ford Mustang GTD form. The Blue Oval brand recently revealed its latest special edition model at the 2025 Detroit Auto Show to celebrate its motorsports heritage. While the Mustang GTD’s 815 horsepower supercharged V8 goes unchanged, Ford made several changes to the modern muscle car’s styling and aerodynamics.

This limited-edition Ford Mustang GTD borrows its name from the legendary jet-powered land speed record setting vehicles that the late Craig Breedlove designed. Breedlove left this earth in April of 2023, leaving behind a legacy that includes being the first person to break the 500 mile-per-hour and 600 mile-per-hour land speed records.

Speaking of records, the Mustang GTD was the first car made by a domestic automaker to break the 7-minute barrier around the Nürburgring. We have the footage and the numbers at this link.

“Mustang GTD Spirit of America represents more than Mustang’s performance legacy. It honors the American spirit of ingenuity and courage in the face of challenge,” a Ford representative wrote in the press release.

“Mustang GTD is the pinnacle of Mustang performance. Mustang GTD Spirit of America celebrates the daring behind that performance. Mustang GTD wouldn’t have been possible without people like Craig Breedlove, pushing the edge of the envelope and challenging the Goliaths of the day in an all-American way,” Mustang GTD brand manager Jim Owens said.

The Spirit of America Mustang GTD wears exposed carbon-fiber exterior components designed to improve aerodynamics and downforce, such as a front splitter and rear diffuser. Of the added aero, the car’s rear wing stands out the most and sports a bold MUSTANG script, in case anyone coming up on the GTD in traffic doesn’t know what they’re up against.

Finished in Performance White, the Spirit of America is adorned with twin racing stripes running the length of the car in Race Red and Lightning Blue, mimicking the iconic red, white, and blue Mustang tribar that debuted in 1964. The color scheme is a nod to the overalls that Craig Breedlove wore when he broke both aforementioned speed barriers.

The Performance package is included on all Spirit of America models. Inside the cabin you’ll find unique sport seats with Black Onyx upholstery surrounded by red, white, and blue accents, plus Victory Blue paddle shifters.

Pricing has not yet been announced for the 2025 Ford Mustang GTD Spirit of America, but we do know that the MSRP of the standard GTD model is expected to reach around $325,000. Ford will only produce a limited run of 1000 or so Ford Mustang GTD models, so the Spirit of America special edition is expected to be even more rare and costly.
