BMW teases new generation of electrified M cars
Quad-motor performance promises a little excitement in a humdrum segment.
BMW’s M division is pushing the boundaries of electrification, offering a glimpse into the future of high-performance EVs. While models like the i5 M60 and i7 M70 sit within the M Performance lineup, a true electric M car is still a few years away. However, BMW has started laying the groundwork, with prototypes showcasing what’s to come.
A new video from BMW M provides a rare behind-the-scenes look at the development process for these electric performance vehicles. One standout revelation: all future M EVs will feature a quad-motor system. Carsten Wolf, Head of Overall Vehicle Development for BMW M, describes the setup as delivering "unprecedented performance, quality, and features that you can't even imagine today."

BMW shows off prototypes packed with innovations
The prototype highlighted in the video isn’t just an i4 M50 with a flashy wrap. Instead, it integrates a host of upgrades, including carbon-ceramic brakes, reinforced bodywork for added stiffness, and redesigned subframes for both axles. These enhancements aim to support the demanding dynamics that come with four independent electric motors.
BMW's transparent approach to the development process also stands out. The video includes a moment where an X7 is shown jump-starting the prototype after an issue with the AC compressor. Engineers eventually resolved the problem by replacing the front motors. Such challenges underline the complexity of developing performance-oriented EVs.
BMW has yet to share any performance figures, but we're expecting the first fully electric M car to pack plenty of horsepower. The challenge will be doing it without adding even more curb weight to an already hefty lineup of performance vehicles.

A glimpse into BMW’s electric future
While an exact release date for a production-ready electric M car remains unclear, the prototype and the quad-motor technology point toward a new era of high-performance EVs. BMW M boss Frank van Meel has already confirmed an electric sedan that mirrors the performance ethos of the iconic M3. Reports suggest it could arrive as early as 2027 or 2028.
Despite the shift toward electrification, traditional M models aren’t going away. A next-generation gas-powered M3 is reportedly in the works, with a codename of "G84." Expected to debut in 2028, this model is rumored to feature an automatic transmission and all-wheel drive system. Those details might not be well received by some enthusiasts, but the fact that BMW is continuing its legacy of internal combustion engines alongside its electric advancements is a promising sign.

Final thoughts
The day when BMW only offers electric M cars will surely happen eventually, but in the near future it appears drivers will only be getting more options, not fewer.
BMW’s M division is clearly preparing for a future where electrification and performance coexist, promising innovations that can hopefully bring excitement to a sector many still view as soulless when compared to ICE vehicles.
