Ford recently launched the official Expedition configurator, allowing customers to customize their own 2025 model-year SUV. Alongside the new civilian model, the order books are also open for police departments to order the 2025 Ford Expedition SSV, which coincides with Ford celebrating 75 years of service to law enforcement.

“Duty is at the heart of everything our valued law enforcement customers do,” said Lindsey Bertino, police brand marketing manager. “And that’s a standard Expedition SSV is built to meet.”

The fifth generation of the Ford Expedition moves the full-size SUV considerably upmarket, elevating its appeal to families in need of large capabilities.

Those same capabilities can also aid police officials, as every Expedition is outfitted with a 3.5-liter EcoBoost good for 400 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. Four-wheel-drive (4WD) is also standard, as is a two-speed transfer case with Touch on Demand and 4-Auto.

Towing tech is also included in police-spec Expeditions, such as Pro Trailer Hitch Assist, Pro Trailer Backup Assist, and blindspot monitoring with cross-traffic and trailer coverage assist to ensure a safe hookup every time.

Bare bones no more, the 2025 Expedition streamlines the interior from civilian use to police use. The 24-inch display remains as well as the center display, which should support wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Moving down the center stack, USB ports and 4WD controls flank the lower console followed by lighting/siren controls and the police radio. Assume the cloth seats will provide hours-long comfort for patrol officers on shift.

In a rare move, the 2025 Ford Expedition gains a split-open tailgate that’s exclusive to the large SUV class and powered in the model's civilian version. Ford hasn’t emphasized whether this is powered in police units, which may require quick access to the trunk if officers need to retrieve stop sticks or other equipment to prevent a suspect from getting away.

2025 Ford Police Fleet

Ford

At the same time that Ford launched the 2025 Expedition SSV, it’s looking back at its legacy of providing vehicles for law enforcement that started with the 1950 Ford Custom Police Package.

“For 75 years we’ve been working with law enforcement, we are grateful to all of the agencies, officers, and Ford employees that have helped design and build America’s best-selling lineup of police vehicles,” said Bertino.

Today, the police lineup offers two EVs, the F-150, and the hybridized Police Interceptor Utility (Explorer) to go with the 2025 Expedition SSV. The latter will compete alongside the Chevrolet Tahoe PPV and Dodge Durango Pursuit to cater to police departments in need of larger vehicles.
