Carspotting: Wild Willie Pushes For A Win

The late Willie Borsch (1930-1991) scored this version of a “walk-off” win in the second round of Super Eliminator battle, only to lose the Winternationals war by failing to repair the broken rearend that forced him to get out and push towards Pomona Raceway’s finish line (white stripes). Antiquated rules, carried over from the formative 1950s, required a driver to complete winning runs “under power,” without outside assistance. One round earlier, Model T fans thrilled to Wild Willie’s shocking upset of Bill Lawton’s factory-backed Mustang Funny Car (8.63 e.t. to 9.01).
