Car Tales: Is This Pro Street 1970 Ford Mustang A Muscle Car Or A Hot Rod?

“Hot rods” should not be confused with “muscle cars”, insists Wikipedia.

Yet in today’s classic automobile example at Beverly Hills Car Club we are considering a fusion of the two, a hot-rodded version of one of the quintessential muscle cars, a Ford Mustang.

So please let me introduce to you our 1970 Ford Mustang Pro Street fastback that is finished in its factory color Grabber Blue with black decals, complemented by its chrome trim.

Matching its aggressive stance, under the hood you will find a potent 390-cu.in. V-8 engine, Toploader 4-speed manual transmission, Summit Max EFI 500 V2 Throttle Body Injection System, four-wheel disc brakes, Cobra Jet hood scoop, rear spoiler, rear window louvers, three -spoke steering wheel, Hurst shifter, Auto Meter instrumentation, chrome bumpers, meaty Mickey Thompson tires, and 15-inch Centerline chrome wheels.

This Mustang fastback boasts a Pro Street style that sets it apart from the rest. With its side exhaust outlets, 31X18.50-15LT rear tires, modified rear wheel tubs, and a roll cage, this classic muscle car is a true head-turner that commands attention wherever it goes. This example includes a copy of a Deluxe Marti Report, providing valuable insight into its history and authenticity.

The term “Pro Street” – as in “Ford Mustang Fastback Pro Street Hot Rod” – is also known as a back half or tubbed car, and is used to describe a style of street-legal custom car popular in the 1980s, usually built to imitate an NHRA Pro Stock-class race car. Essentially, it is a synonym for hot rod. Pro Street cars are close in appearance to cars used in drag racing, while remaining street-legal and with a full interior.

Cars of this type typically feature two of the following three modifications:

• A highly modified V-8.
• A narrowed rear axle coupled with oversized rear wheels & at least a 14″ (36 cm) wide x 5+” (13+ cm) sidewalls (located within the wheel wells) for maximum grip and wheelie bars.
• A roll cage.

Aside from the rear suspension and wheel wells, cars of this type often remain unmodified past the firewall, keeping stock floor pans, a full interior with windshield wipers, carpet, and working lights.

Nowadays there is a growing trend of owners who are converting their former drag race cars into street machines. These retired racers still pack serious power under the hood and retain the traditional look, but the quality of craftsmanship has skyrocketed, with special attention to body, paint, and drivability.

And the hot rod we have right now is the perfect example of such modern muscle motoring.

Whether you are selling a showroom-quality car, or a total restoration project, the Beverly Hills Car Club is always looking to add to their wide-ranging inventory. For cars that are barn-find restoration projects, all the way up to top-of-the-line concours cars; you are sure to find your dream car!
