2025 Kia EV9: 4 reasons to love it, 2 reasons to think twice
Based on the same platform as the upcoming Hyundai IONIQ 9, the Kia EV9 has a lot going for it - but it’s not perfect.
The Kia EV9 can be considered a loner, given that there aren’t that many competitors in its three-row, all-electric SUV segment. As of now you can pretty much count them on one hand, but more are coming. The list below shows four reasons why I think the Kia EV9 is outstanding, and two reasons you may want to look elsewhere.
I have seen plenty on the road and driven my fair share. This is a fine driving EV, one that's surprisingly easy to live with - provided you have the means to top it off. It's about the same size as a Kia Telluride, but they feel completely different from each other.

Reason to love it #1: Styling
If you’re looking for something boxy that oozes “SUV” while actually being a family hauler in disguise, the Kia EV9 has your number. While it looks like a mix between other Kia design ethos and a Toyota Land Cruiser, you won’t mistake it for either. It is unique in a world of ubiquity.
Reason to love it #2: Speed
With 576 horsepower, the Kia EV9 can jet from 0 to 60 mph in less than 5-seconds. Keep in mind: this thing weighs between (approximately) 5,100 - 5,900 lbs. That’s a lot. On top of that, its maximum DC fast-charging rate is 235 kilowatts, with the small battery and 210 kW with the large. Either way, that’s a setup for some rapid charging. Provided the charger is up to the task.
Reason to love it #3: Range
The larger 99.8-kWh battery gives the EV9 an EPA-estimated range of 304 miles when properly equipped. If you get the base with its 76.1-kWh battery you get an EPA-estimated range of 230 miles which is still acceptable to many consumers.
Reason to love it #4: All that standard tech
The EV9 has a ton of standard tech to go along with its futuristic swagger. This includes OTA updates, two 12.3-inch screens split between driver info and infotainment, level III drive modes, full wireless connectivity. and a serious driver’s assistance package.
Reason to think twice #1: Ho-Hum Interior design
There’s nothing wrong with the interior design per se; it's roomy, comfortable and utilitarian. It’s also a bit boring compared to the wildly futuristic exterior aesthetic Kia engineers aimed for. Its younger brother, the Hyundai IONIQ 9 is far more gripping to behold inside.
Reason to think twice #2: That price!
The Kia EV9 has a starting MSRP of $54,900 before taxes and fees. If you get a fully equipped model with some accessories, the price can hover near the $80,000 zone. This is a family hauler, and that’s an eye watering sticker to behold.

Sure, there are tax incentives, but only if you qualify. In addition, some folks can find savings through other means - even for chargers. The bottom line is: this EV isn’t exactly cheap. Competition from Tesla, GM, Mercedes-Benz and even VinFast (among others) is worth a look.
Oh! If you need something to haul the family that’s not exactly an SUV, I have an interesting alternative for you. Check out the Volkswagen ID Buzz. What it lacks in ability, it makes up for with its charm.
